 This weekend is Father’s Day – a chance to say thanks to the men who have nurtered, listened, loved, been our free personal Uber driver and the bank manager who never refused us money. Well, almost never. But buying for Dads can be tough. Let’s face it, they’ve pretty much got everything they want, haven’t they? How many pairs of socks can one guy own? Where It All Began

The Father’s Day we know now started off in the U.S. in the early 20th century, but only really took off in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Desperate to get the economy moving, retailers and advertisers tried to make Father’s Day a ‘second Christmas’ for men, promoting things like ties, hats, socks, greeting cards, golf clubs and other sports items.   • Americans will spend a record $16 billion on Father’s Day gifts this year, according to the National Retail Federation.
  • While Father’s Day spending this year is an increase from 2018’s $15.3 billion, it’s still way below the cost of celebrating Mother’s Day. This year, U.S. consumers spent $25 billion on gifts for moms.
  • Father’s Day spending has grown 70%, or $6.6 billion, in the last decade, according to the National Retail Federation.
  • U.S. consumers shopping for Dads will spend an estimated $138.97 on average.
  • The most popular Father’s Day gifts are special outings, with people spending a total of $3.3 billion on them. In contrast to jewelry is the top gift for Mother’s Day, and it’s worth $5.2 billion.
  • Computer-related accessories and electronics account for $1.8 billion of spending dollars and range from phones to software, to TVs and media devices.
