Back to School, Back to Reality - Top Tips to Prepare

14th August 2018 in Uncategorized

'Back to School' is upon us! With only days to go, the count down for the start of the new term is well underway. If it’s crept up on you, leaving you feeling unprepared and apprehensive here are some tips that could ease your anxieties.

Get organized

With school comes a flurry of unknown papers into your house. Designate a spot in your home for homework, permission slips and any other school-related papers. This will help eliminate paper clutter and make your life less stressful. You can also create a family calendar, with a Google calendar or a wall calendar that highlights family activities, school events and homework deadlines.

Shop for school supplies together

Get your child excited about getting back into the classroom by shopping for school supplies together. Allow them to pick out their own backpack, lunchbox, pencils, etc. This is also a great way to give them a little bit of responsibility too!

Start a bedtime schedule

So that your child gets back into the routine of waking up perhaps earlier than they normally would. Ensure your child gets at least 10 hours of sleep a night. As adults, we’re aware of the implications of which a lack of sleep can cause, and how it can negatively effect our concentration the next day.

Review school material and information

Most schools send home a packet with a ton of information regarding teachers, transportation routines, important dates to remember, emergency form, etc. Make sure that you read through this information carefully, and mark down all important dates on your calendar.

Set up a homework station

Designate a time and place where your child can do their homework in peace each day. Make sure to choose a time where you are available in case your child needs your help. Encourage them to complete any homework they might have earlier in the evening rather than later so you can enjoy your evening together as a family.
